Designing your bathroom like a professional: Insider tips to create a designer look

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing a series of professional design tips that will help you transform your bathroom into a designer-worthy space.

This week, we’ll start with Tips 1 & 2, focusing on how to lay the groundwork for a beautifully designed bathroom that balances both practicality and luxury.

A bathroom should be a space that feels both comforting and uplifting, a place that refreshes you in the morning and helps you relax at night. As the room where you begin and end each day, your bathroom deserves just as much thought and care as any other space in your home.

Yet, bathrooms often lack the warmth and personality found in other rooms. The need for practical features can result in a space that feels cold or impersonal. But with the right design approach (the ERI approach!), your bathroom can become a cozy, welcoming retreat that combines functionality with style.

Tip # 1: Start with a Thoughtful Layout: Function Meets Beauty

The foundation of a well-designed bathroom is a functional layout. The arrangement of the bath, shower, vanity, and storage must flow naturally, making the space feel cohesive and practical.

  • Designer Tip: Begin with the flow of traffic in the bathroom. I create zones by separating the wet area (shower, bath) from the dry area (vanity, toilet) to keep the space organized and easy to use. Think about how you move through the room in your daily routine, and plan accordingly.

  • Pro Insight: Avoid cramming too many elements into a small space. Professional designs often include fewer, high-impact pieces to avoid clutter and create a sense of luxury.

Below is a primary ensuite I worked on. The first sketch shows the original layout when I began collaborating with my clients. I carefully designed the new layout, thoughtfully considering their preferences while maximizing functionality. My aim was to create a space that not only fulfilled their practical needs but also showcased beauty and elegance.

The most frequently used areas, the shower and sinks, were cramped and small. Given the room's generous size, I took the time to reflect on the design and completely reimagined the layout to maximize its potential.

The clients loved spending time in the shower, so I designed a spacious walk-in shower featuring a comfortable seat, inviting them to relax and unwind in the warm water.

I positioned the bathtub as a focal point in the room, using the shower wall as a perfect partition to discreetly conceal the toilet from view upon entering.

The niches that once housed the vanity units on either side of the fireplace are now transformed into hidden storage solutions.

A large double vanity provides the clients with ample surface space, complemented by a generous mirror that reflects the beauty of the shower area.

Tip #2: Choose Quality Materials and Finishes

Selecting the right materials and finishes is crucial in bathroom design, as they significantly influence both the aesthetics and functionality of the space. Here are some key considerations to keep in mind:

1. Prioritize Durability and Maintenance

Bathrooms are high-moisture areas, so it’s essential to choose materials that can withstand humidity and wear. Opt for durable surfaces such as:

  • Porcelain and Ceramic Tiles: These are not only water-resistant but also available in a variety of styles and finishes. They can mimic the look of natural stone without the maintenance issues.

  • Natural Stone: Materials like granite, marble, or quartz can add a luxurious feel.

2. Create Visual Interest with Textures

Mixing textures can elevate the design and add depth to your bathroom. Consider incorporating:

  • Matte and Glossy Finishes: Pairing matte tiles with glossy fixtures creates a beautiful contrast. For example, a matte tile backdrop with polished chrome taps can add sophistication.

  • Textured Wall Treatments: Use textured wallpaper or panelling in specific areas to create a focal point and break up the hard surfaces typical in bathrooms.

3. Colour Palette Considerations

The colours you choose for your materials can significantly affect the mood of the space:

  • Neutral Tones: Soft grays, whites, and beiges create a calming environment and allow for flexibility in accessories and decor.

  • Bold Accents: If you want to make a statement, consider bold colours in smaller areas, to add personality without overwhelming the space.

4. Fixtures and Hardware

Selecting high-quality fixtures and hardware is just as important as choosing the right surfaces:

  • Taps and Showerheads: Invest in high-quality taps and shower fittings! These are items you definitely don’t want to replace in a few years. Choosing lower-quality fittings can lead to frequent plumbing issues, turning your plumber into your new best friend. Opt for durable, reliable fixtures that will stand the test of time and enhance the beauty of your bathroom.

  • Cabinetry Finishes: Look for cabinetry made from moisture-resistant materials, especially in high-humidity areas. Soft-close hinges and high-quality drawer slides enhance functionality and longevity.

5. Personal Touches

Finally, don’t hesitate to incorporate materials that reflect your personal style. Whether it's a unique backsplash, decorative tiles, or custom cabinetry, these elements can make your bathroom feel truly special and tailored to your taste.

As you embark on your bathroom design journey, remember that selecting the right layout and high-quality materials is essential for creating a space that is both functional and beautiful. These first two tips lay the foundation for a designer-worthy bathroom that meets your needs and reflects your style.
