Designing Your Bathroom Like a Professional: Insider Tips to Create a Designer Look Part 2

Welcome back to Part Two of the "Designing Your Bathroom Like a Professional" series. If you’re just tuning in, last week we explored bathroom layouts and fixtures, laying the foundation for a functional and stylish space.

This week, we’re diving into a crucial element: lighting.

Lighting is key to creating a bathroom that feels luxurious and balanced, so let's get started!

Tip # 3: LIGHTING

People often underestimate the importance of good lighting in a bathroom. However, getting the lighting right can completely transform how your space feels and functions. From bright, task-oriented lighting for cleaning and applying makeup to soft, ambient lighting for relaxation, it’s essential to strike the perfect balance. The difference thoughtful lighting makes is huge, both in practicality and atmosphere.

Your bathroom serves two distinct purposes: it’s a place to refresh and rejuvenate, and it’s a place to relax and unwind. Layering your lighting with a variety of sources is key to creating a space that meets both needs. Lighting will be next on the list of things to decide on once the layout is agreed, so get planning!

ALERT!

In moisture-prone spaces like bathrooms, lighting fixtures must be IP-rated to ensure they’re water-protected and safe for use. Fortunately, bathroom lighting has come a long way in recent years. Today, there are countless beautiful options to choose from, unlike a decade ago when the choices were often limited to cold, clinical designs. Now, you can have both style and safety in your bathroom lighting. HOORAH!

1. Layer Up Your Lighting

Layering isn’t just a fashion term, it’s a crucial design principle in interiors that builds depth, character, and a fully realized look. The same applies to your bathroom’s lighting. Thoughtfully layering different light sources is key to creating a space that meets your needs, whether you’re getting ready for the day or winding down in the evening.

To ensure your bathroom is both functional and relaxing, layer your lighting with a mix of different sources:

  • Recessed Spotlights: Thoughtful positioning of spotlights can transform the entire feel of your bathroom. Instead of the typical grid formation on the ceiling, try placing spotlights closer to the walls. For example, positioning spots near the walls, let’s say in the shower, creates a beautiful “wash” effect that accentuates the marble or tiles, adding a sense of drama and depth. (very hotel spa-like!)

  • LED strips in shower niches: LED strips in shower niches are essential for adding subtle, practical lighting that highlights both the beauty and functionality of the space. They provide soft illumination for showering and highlight decorative elements or your chosen tile design.

  • Wall Lights: Perfect for softer, more targeted lighting around the vanity or mirrors.

  • LED Strips Under Cabinets or Shelves: These offer a modern, sleek accent and create a warm glow, ideal for an evening wind-down.

  • Statement Pendant: If your layout allows, a bold pendant or chandelier can act as a beautiful focal point, giving the room a designer touch.

2. Focus on the Vanity

The vanity area is where you need bright, even lighting, especially for grooming tasks. Position wall lights on either side of the mirror for balanced, shadow-free illumination.

Alternatively, a mirror with integrated lighting is a sleek, modern solution. For added luxury, opt for one with a built-in demister to keep it fog-free after a steamy shower. Always consider dimmable lights here, allowing you to adjust the brightness depending on the time of day or mood.

3. Low-Level Lighting for Night-Time

For night time visits, discreet low-level lighting is a game-changer. Motion-activated lights placed under the vanity or along the skirting boards near the toilet offer a soft, calming glow without disturbing your sleep or shocking your eyes with harsh brightness. It’s a simple yet impactful feature that adds both convenience and style to your bathroom design.

I could really keep going on and on about lighting, but I have to stop at some point!

I hope today’s focus on lighting has inspired you to rethink how you can use it to transform your space. I also hope this has helped you realize the importance of planning your lighting early on. It’s a crucial step in the design process, so start thinking about it early on to ensure you achieve the perfect balance of style and function.
