Part 5- Designing your bathroom like a professional

Over the past few weeks, we’ve explored essential tips for designing a beautiful and functional bathroom, covering everything from thoughtful layouts and quality fixtures to the perfect lighting and carefully chosen colours and materials. Today, we’re wrapping up with the final blog post in this series, focusing on those finishing touches that bring everything together and truly elevate your space.

We are diving straight into the finishing touches that make all the difference in creating a luxurious, spa-like bathroom at home. From luxury amenities to smart technology, these elements combine to transform your bathroom into a 5-star retreat.

Let’s explore how these finishing touches can bring the ultimate level of comfort and style to your space.

Luxury Amenities: The Finishing Touches

It’s often the small details that transform a bathroom from a functional space into a personal retreat. Incorporating luxurious amenities elevates your daily routine, bringing a touch of the 5-star experience to your own home.

When it comes to creating a truly luxurious bathroom, I have always drawn inspiration from designer Ilse Crawford and her emphasis on engaging all the senses. Her perspective resonates with me deeply: interiors should be about more than just visual appeal; they should create an experience that feels nurturing and enhances our daily routines.

In the bathroom, adding elements like scented candles, plush towels, and soothing bath oils doesn’t just enhance aesthetics it elevates the experience, transforming ordinary moments into something special. By thoughtfully considering the senses of touch, scent, and even sound, we can turn our bathrooms into spaces that feel restorative and indulgent. This sensory approach is what brings a unique sense of luxury to your everyday routine.

Project: House on the Hill, guest bathroom

To complete your bathroom sanctuary, here are some luxurious finishing touches that bring warmth, comfort, and a sense of indulgence to your everyday routine.

  • Heated floors and towel rails: There’s nothing like stepping out of the shower onto warm tiles or wrapping up in a cosy, heated towel. Investing in underfloor heating and heated towel rails adds a level of comfort that feels luxurious and indulgent, especially during the colder months.

- Plush towels and robes: Think of the soft, fluffy towels and robes that you look forward to at a high-end hotel. Recreate that experience with high-quality, thick towels and a plush bathrobe. These small comforts go a long way in making your bathroom feel like a retreat.

- Scented candles and spa accessories: To truly elevate the sensory experience, add thoughtfully chosen candles, diffusers, or bath salts. These details enhance the ambiance, creating a soothing atmosphere that invites relaxation and rejuvenation. You don’t need to overdo it; a few select items can transform the room without cluttering it.

Adding smart technology to your bathroom is a wonderful way to combine functionality with a touch of innovation, all while enhancing your everyday experience.

  • Smart Mirrors: Modern mirrors with LED backlighting, anti-fog features, and built-in Bluetooth speakers add both function and a contemporary aesthetic to your bathroom. These smart mirrors can help set the lighting tone for everything from makeup application to a calm, ambient glow for evening relaxation.

  • Integrated Bluetooth Speakers: Music has a powerful way of setting the mood, and discreet, waterproof Bluetooth speakers are ideal for bathrooms. Connect easily to your devices to enjoy a curated playlist, enhancing your relaxation time or energizing your morning routine.

When designing a luxurious bathroom, it’s the smaller details that pull everything together and elevate the space to a designer level. Thoughtful accessories and high-quality fixtures bring both function and a polished look to the bathroom. Here are a few must-have finishing touches to consider:

  • Good quality fittings: Choosing high-quality fixtures like a sturdy, elegant toilet roll holder and matching towel bars or rings adds an instant sense of refinement. These fittings are used every day, so it’s worth investing in durable, stylish options that complement your bathroom’s aesthetic.

  • Convenient robe hooks: For convenience, install a few robe hooks near the shower or bath. Not only do they provide easy access for towels or robes, but they also keep items off the floor, helping to maintain a clean, organised look.

  • Toilet roll storage: If storage space is limited, a stylish basket or container for extra toilet rolls is a functional yet beautiful addition. Baskets in natural materials like woven seagrass or rattan add texture and warmth, while keeping necessities close at hand.

And with that, we’ve come to the end of the road with my bathroom design series!

From layout considerations to lighting, materials, colour schemes, and those all-important finishing touches, it’s been a pleasure sharing this journey with you.

Putting together these posts made me realize just how much there is to say about each stage of the design process. Working in design day-to-day means I live and breathe these details, and capturing them in words was an exciting way to translate that experience.
